Getting Started

[ Okay, to get started I decided that I needed to know when the "annual maintenance" was due.  I figured that Engineer Scott Grok's efforts would have pushed the date forward at bit . . . so I rolled two d12s and would take the higher for the month when the annual maintenance would be due . . . and rolled 11 and 4 . . . so it will be due on Day 330.]

Week 1           Cresta

[Jonas]   While looking for a speculative cargo, a shipment of 80 tons of Dyes was available for 360,000 credits . . . which we could afford (we started with 465,000 cr), so I snapped it up because we would be headed to Carver's Range next where the dyes should sell at a bit of a premium.

I was able to pick up an additional 15 tons of Bulk Cargo to fill our hold.  As for passengers, until I had a chance to learn more about our new Stewards I didn't want to overbook . . . but I was able to get 8 Middle and all 8 Low Passage berths filled.  (income of 234,000)

Need to re-do all math figures -- above & below

As a Class C port, all that was available was unrefined fuel (cost 12,000) which we then ran through our on-board refining process.  Accumulated Docking Fees added up to (2d12 weeks) 900 credits.  Finally stocking up on our supplies cost an additional 30,000 credits; and our "maintenance" expenses were about 1,800 credits.  Crew salaries are not due yet.  (Total expenditures including spec cargo = 404,700 credits -- leaving a ship's fund of 294,300 credits).

Other, Wider Maps

Since I fully expect that the Blue Pelican may well journey beyond its immediate neighbors, here is a map of a wider area of space . . . (open as separate tab for optimum viewing):

And for those who wish to see even more, here is an even wider map:

Note that the "pink" area near the top of the above map is the rimward part of the Plavian League; additionally the Megusard Corporate and Swanfei Free Worlds . . . not that expect the Blue Pelican to journey that far afield . . . but one never knows for sure.

The Sub-Sector Map

Above is the Blue Pelican's "home subsector".  Well outside of Imperial space, the area in RED is part of the Galian Federation.  The area in BLUE is part of the Trindel Confederacy.  And the area in GOLD is the tip of the Viyard Concourse.  In addition, although not currently visible, the Plavian League is not far off the top of the map . . . so it is certainly likely that Sector politics will cause some difficulties.

While the Blue Pelican starts her adventures at Cresta, she is headed in the direction of MedRealm, where co-owner Kara Lou Macbeth has relatives.  The hope is that MedRealm will become their "home port" and that they will be able to operate from there.

The Ship

Cresta -- C-768 988-C / Gateway Sector / Gamma Quadrant / Beckann Subsector

We have arrived and have established our ownership of our 300-ton Far Trader . . . but have also been advised that it is "occupied".

Arriving to evict the tenant and take possession of the ship we found that it was in great shape . . . and the "tenant" turned out to be the ship's former Chief Engineer, Steve Grok.  He stayed while the rest of the crew left to sign onto other vessels after the change of ownership was announced.

He said he had been with the ship for over four and a half years . . . and when everyone left he figured that he finally had enough time to fix a lot of "little niggles" that had bothered him but which couldn't be done while the ship was active.

He then gave Kara Lou and me a guided tour of our new home.

Basically she was a "stretched" Dione class Far Trader with a Jump-2 capability.  There were the Captain's and five more crew quarters as well as six double-occupancy passenger staterooms and eight low berths (plus one emergency medical low berth).  The Captain's cabin was over-sized and would be perfect for Kara Lou and me.

She had 95 tons of cargo capacity and could carry 66 tons of fuel (but the cargo hold is also plumbed for collapsible and demountable fuel tanks in the event that multiple jumps are planned).  In addition, she was streamlined with fuel scoops and facilities for refining unrefined fuel.  She was equipped with two hard points which had sandcasters and pulse lasers (primarily for defense and to discourage bandits on more primitive worlds).

There is one ship's vehicle, an air/raft.

On the negative side, her exterior design has a rather ungainly appearance . . . even though it is painted a rather lovely "ocean reef blue" color . . . which perhaps explains why Kara Lou suggested naming her the "Blue Pelican".

On the interior, everything was immaculate.  A quick glance and raised eyebrow to Kara Lou got a smiling nod . . . so I asked Scott Grok if he'd like to sign on as Chief Engineer.

He said yes, on one condition.  He wanted a veto on any additional Engineers.  He wanted to check them out not just read their credentials.  If he didn't feel that they were capable of treating the ship properly, he didn't want them as crew.

I had no problem with this, so we now not only have a ship but had now begun recruiting a crew.
